Theatre West

the painting

a commentary by david carter

often a stage set is set. the designer designs it, the actors use it, but by and large once set, it remains set.

working with the development and process of 'other', and the fact that Alison Comley (the director) had no set or direction notes, just 45 pages of dialogue, I wanted to unset the set as it were. at the back of the stage is a giant canvas, after each performance I try to portray my response to the show, and the responses of others, on the canvas. consequently, the visual imagery changes daily.

without sounding like a wordy knob-head I wanted to retain some of the organic nature of the play.

each change on the canvas is photographed and displayed here on the website.
